I actually like his first works better. they were less cryptic :) .
The debut short novels–nearly thirty years out of print– by the internationally acclaimed writer, newly retranslated and in one English-language volume for the first time, with a new introduction by the author.
These first major works of fiction by Haruki Murakami center on two young men–an unnamed narrator and his friend and former roommate, the Rat. Powerful, at times surreal, stories of loneliness, obsession, and eroticism, these novellas bear all the hallmarks of Murakami’s later books, giving us a fascinating insight into a great writer’s beginnings, and are remarkable works of fiction in their own right. Here too is an exclusive essay by Murakami in which he explores and explains his decision to become a writer. Prequels to the much-beloved classics A Wild Sheep Chase and Dance Dance Dance, these early works are essential reading for Murakami completists and contemporary fiction lovers alike.

I like his older works bettter as well, which I can say for many writers.
What is it with writers, that the best stuff they write is in their 20s and 30s, when they supposedly still know nothing about life, and as they age and mature “great” writers become merely “readable”?

I think expectations rise, they are less free with their work, more conservative maybe, less original because they have seen so much and read so much and they can’t help but follow a trend based on their experience. There’s this saying: “write a book which you don’t even know how it ends”. Murakami has become predictable by the fact that his books turn weirder and weirder, but still somehow predictable and the open ending is already a done deal. We want to see something new :) .

Stephen King immediately comes to mind with the older, mature, crappier kind of writing.

I don’t think it is any secret that people get old and tired. Distracted by life. Even become different people who maybe are locked to chasing the dreams of their younger selves. And of course maybe they just run out of things to say.
I strongly disagree abou Stephen King being a “crappier” writer in his old age. They’re just different. Even without the gold of his earlier work, he’d still be revered because of works like Doctor Sleep, End of Watch and Duma Key, etc.

Thanks Tessa21, totally agree with your take on author over-maturization.

Part of the charm is that they haven’t figured out how to deal with life’s deepest philosophical problems. Once they have an idea of what path to follow, things become a bit formulaic.
That being said, i love how Murakami sometimes reintroduces the same images and feelings to his stories.

Hi! I really love this audiobook version of Wind/Pinball. I had a copy once but my hard drive broke. I’ve been trying to download it since then but it’s stuck at 50%. Can someone please seed? Thanks a lot.
