Every self-respecting lich has a few hundred phylacteries at a minimum, and Harold wants to check in on a few thousand of his. Rumors reach him that the vicious Mantis Queen has one of them. Naturally, she’s at the other end of the region. It’s just a casual stroll across the deserted and inhospitable Flaming Steppes. Inhospitable for the living, that is!Fenfang Fang—the Limpet—is taking her job as Harold’s very first warlock seriously. The ancient lich figures it’s time for his protégé to learn the ins-and-outs of politics by ruling an entire city. Baby steps! Ruling the decrepit city of Yu Xiang looks easy enough. A mudhole at the ass-end of the Empire, ashen dirt that’s nearly impossible to farm, waters filled with dangerous beasts, could it be any easier?Of course, rumors reach the Jade Throne that a horrible Lich has taken over the city, and an army of conscripts and lessor cultivators is formed to uproot the great evil. What fantastical sights will Harold see on his trip? Will Limpet be able to keep the city and her head from the army? And the biggest question of all—Will Rem finally get to eat Alex?

The download is fine. I love the series, and I especially like the whole cultivation vs. a more conventional magic-based system. I never did much get into the whole cultivation thing. I’m glad to see protagonists who also don’t. It is, indeed, as jkintxy57 writes, a fun series.
That said, this particular book commits what I consider to be an absolutely unforgivable literary sin: they/them pronouns. This sort of bovine excrement is confusing enough when used in normal conversation by people who don’t seem to know any better. In an audiobook, it’s not only confusing but jarring and totally immersion-breaking. It just isn’t how the English language works. Fortunately, it seems to be limited to the perspective of a single character.
However, I have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to this kind of crap. Perhaps you will be less discerning.

Bit of an update. I made myself listen to a bit more (it’s difficult to listen to they/them nonsense, but the REST of the story is good). The confusion with Alex’s sex (the author, like many people, wrongly uses ‘gender’ instead of sex) is… rather serious. Sometimes Alex is ’she’. Sometimes Alex is ‘them’. Sometimes Alex is ‘he’. The author seems to be trying to tie different pronouns to different perspectives, but whatever the intent, the result is confusion. Alex was made unnecessarily complicated from the start, a move that was in my opinion the author trying to be too clever for his own good.
The only pass I can give Ravensdagger here is using gender instead of sex for skeletons. This is only in one spot. Since gender can be anything these days, even things that cannot be defined or communicated in any coherent way to others, it really has no meaning in any informational sense. However, a skeleton is just bones and, maybe, ligaments. IT has no reproductive organs, hence it actually has no sex. In this case, in practical terms, all that would remain (if a personality was intact) would be it’s memory of what it used to be. True, that’s an idea. And true, you can actually tell sex by examining a skeleton so even a skeleton *should* have a proper sex tied to what it was, but most people don’t know that, it seems. So while pronouns are properly tied to sex -to what a person ACTUALLY is, in this case… well, why not? But even so, they/them is STILL confusing, because the way it’s used STILL creates confusion in regard to whether one entity is being referred to, or many. I would suggest, however, that a skeleton should be an honorific he, an honorific she, or simply an ‘it’.
However, there is another observation. Having spent some time on Royal Road, I can see patterns in how this story is written. The Dead Tired books were shaped and guided by Royal Road, or some similar site’s algorithm. That’s the reason chapters are the way they are.
See, on royal road, the most important thing is exposure. Quality is actually secondary, although it is a good thing. What you want is for as many people to see your story as possible. How do you do that? Activity. This leads to short chapters posted more often, not because that’s how the author would necessarily naturally write, but because that works much better algorithmically than another way.
But Chapters need logical division points. You can’t just start and end anywhere you want and call it a chapter, not if you want it to flow properly. In a sense, a chapter is a mini-story. Writing for the algorithm instead of the story squeezes your story down into short, choppy bits that just feel… cheap, and exploitative, and breaks up the story. Or at least that’s how it comes across to me.
Compared to Alex’ [unnecessary] pronoun confusion, this latter complaint is NOTHING. It doesn’t change what I did and did not enjoy about the story. But it does help recontextualize some of it, and it *is* a complaint.
